Introduced this year, it ranks the top barristers in the UK, according to its research. To be in the initial shortlist of 200 Silks and 200 Juniors, lawyers had to be ranked in Bands One or Two or as ‘Star Individuals’ in a key area of law within Chambers UK Bar 2014. From the shortlists, Chambers & Partners conducted further research to rank the final 100 Silks and 100 Juniors in two separate tables. Gray’s Inn Tax Chambers have two members included. Here is what they said:

Silk

David Goldberg KC is one of the stars of the London Tax Bar. Commentators note that “he always understands the commercial context in which his advice is sought, and always provides practical and sensible advice.” He appeared in the Hong Kong Court of Appeal in a high-value case concerning the origins of a client’s profits.

Junior

Conrad McDonnell is a corporate and indirect tax specialist of renown. He has a diverse client base, although he is more likely to appear on the claimant side rather than act for the revenue. Employee taxation and pension schemes are a particular interest of his and he recently appeared in The Trustees of the BT Pension Scheme v Commissioners for Her Majesty’s Revenue & Customs. Instructing solicitors particularly favour him as he produces “beautiful, clear and coherent opinions” on tricky points of law.
